Call for nominations

D-Foot International is inviting candidates for nomination for members of the Board and the Nominating Committee for the term of office 2021-2023.

The final date of receipt of candidate applications is 30 April 2021

A person may be nominated for more than one position, but can only be elected to one position. 

The Nominating Committee does not accept candidacies proposed by anyone else than the candidate.

Nominations from the floor during the General Assembly will not be accepted.

All positions on the governing bodies are voluntary and unpaid. Members are entitled to reimbursement of approved expenses.

Term of office

The term of office of a member of the Board and the Nominating Committee is a biennium.

Nominees elected at the General Assembly in June 2021 will serve until the ordinary meeting of the General Assembly in 2023.


The elections for the next term of office are scheduled to be held at the General Assembly on 26 June 2021. This date will mark the end of the current biennium. 

Nominations for the next Board

The Articles of Association state that the Board is composed of at least 6 Directors:

  • the President;
  • the President-Elect;
  • the Vice-President Finance; and
  • at least three other Vice-Presidents. 

Vijay Viswanathan, the current President-Elect, will be the President during the next biennium.

The Vice-President Finance, who is appointed to assist the Board on all of D-Foot’s financial and accounting matters, must be qualified in accounting and have financial skills and experience.

At least half of the Directors must be physicians. A “physician” is a person who is a qualified medical doctor, accredited by a national medical accreditation body or institution in the country in which the person works.

A Vice-President is eligible to be re-elected for a second consecutive term. The Vice-President Finance is eligible to be re-elected for more than one term.

Open positions for the next Board

The Nominating Committee decided that the next Board will consist of 7  members:

  • President

Nominations are required for the following positions:

  • President-Elect — 1 vacancy
  • Vice-President Finance — 1 vacancy
  • Vice-President — 4 vacancies

Criteria to be nominated for the next Board

To be considered for nomination to the next Board, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • be passionate about diabetic foot
  • have governance experience, preferably in a non-profit association
  • have a global vision
  • be determined to move the global diabetic foot agenda forward
  • physicians and healthcare professionals must have at least 5 years expert experience in the field of diabetic foot.
  • be available, responsive and have the sens gravitas needed to lead an international organisation. Board members are required to participate in up to 10 Board video conference meetings per year. One meeting per year may be a two-day, in-person strategic meeting. On average, the governance duties of a Vice-President (Finance) require a work effort of approximately 2 days per month in addition to the Board meetings. The work effort for the President and the President-Elect is approximately 1 day per week.
  • not be driven by personal prestige or financial gain
  • be fluent in English

Positions on the Board are open to both National Representatives and others.

Nominations for the next Nominating Committee

The next Nominating Committee will be composed of 4 members:

  • the President-Elect
  • the Immediate Past-President
  • a former Vice-President
  • a Regional Chair, preferably whose term ended in the previous biennium. 

José Luis Lázaro Martínez, the current President, will be the Immediate Past-President when the next Nominating Committee will come in office and will serve ex officio on the next Nominating Committee.

The President-Elect elected at the General Assembly in June 2021 will serve ex officio on the next Nominating Committee.

Open positions for the next Nominating Committee 

Nominations are required for the following positions:

  • a former Vice-President — 1 vacancy
  • a current or former Regional Chair — 1 vacancy

A candidate who is both a former Vice-President and a current or former Regional Chair can only be nominated for one position in the Nominating Committee.

A member of the Nominating Committee is not eligible to be nominated for re-election or for election as President-Elect, Vice-President Finance or other Vice-President.

The work of a member of the next Nominating Committee will start around November 2022 and is a few hours per month until the General Assembly in 2023. 

Information needed from the candidates

The Nominating Committee needs the following information from each candidate: 

  • Full name and contact details
  • The position(s) for which the candidate wishes to be nominated 
  • Nomenclature (”physician”, ”healthcare professional” or ”non-healthcare professional”)
  • A short profile of up to 150 words
  • A short motivational statement of up to 150 words.
  • Disclosure of any relevant conflict of interest.
  • A recent headshot photograph 
  • Confirmation of acceptance to go forward to the General Assembly for election if their candidature is accepted.
  • Optional but preferred: a letter of support from a national diabetes or diabetes foot association supporting the candidate’s candidature.

Announcement of the nominees

The list of nominees to go forward to the General Assembly for election will be announced on 3 June 2021.

Candidates will be informed before this date whether their candidature has been accepted.

All candidatures are kept confidential by the Nominating Committee consisting of Dr Kristien Van Acker, Dr Roberto Anichini and Dr Stephan Morbach. The Nominating Committee will only release its final report.
