We are delighted to announce the publication of the 5th edition of our book, The Foot in Diabetes, published by John Wiley & Co Ltd, Chichester, UK.
This is the 5th edition of what has become a major clinical text on the diabetic foot. The first edition was published back in 1987 following the first International Diabetic Foot meeting in Malvern, UK, that was held in May 1986.
Much has happened in the diabetic foot world since the last edition was published in 2006. We regret that there has been some delay in the publication of this issue, which was in many ways due to the terrible circumstances we now face with the COVID-19 pandemic. In view of this, the editors decided in the introduction, to highlight some of the more recent developments in new treatments for the diabetic foot, referred to as a “renaissance” by our friend and co-author of one of the chapters, Mike Edmonds, from London.
The book starts with chapters on the epidemiology and economic facts of diabetic foot ulceration and amputation. We then have a new section reviewing different aspects of diabetic foot care across the world with well-known authors from the major continents. This is followed by chapters on neuropathy, vascular disease and pathways to ulceration and of course psychological and behavioural aspects of diabetic foot ulceration. In imaging we have added a chapter on new imaging techniques and we have also focused more on smart technology and its place in management of the diabetic foot.
All other topics regarding diabetic foot care including medical and surgical treatments, the Charcot foot and the importance of audit are covered. Finally, in a new section, we have added algorithms for the management of various difficult problems in the diabetic foot.
We do hope that our readers find this to be a useful text. I would like to thank not only my co-editors but also all of the authors for their seminal contributions to this important text.
